Overwhelmed by debt? Talk to a counselor first
Credit counseling is where every client relationship at Credit Services of America begins. Before anyone talks about a program, a certified credit counselor sits down with you, looks at your actual income, expenses, debts, and credit reports, and tells you honestly what would help. Sometimes that is a plan with us. Sometimes it is a budget and a few habit changes you can do on your own.
How it works
1. Free initial consultation (30 to 60 minutes). A fact-finding conversation about your income, your bills, your credit habits, and your goals. We look at your credit reports together and explain what is on them.
2. A customized action plan. Your counselor turns what they learned into a written plan: how to prioritize which debts to pay, what a workable monthly budget looks like, which credit report items can be disputed, and whether a debt management plan or credit repair makes sense for you.
3. Ongoing support. Life changes. Your counselor checks in and adjusts the plan when income rises, expenses jump, or a goal moves up the calendar. Clients also get access to our financial education resources and the client portal.
What personalized counseling covers
- Building a budget that covers essentials and still pays debt down
- Choosing a payoff order that saves the most money
- Negotiating with creditors and collectors
- Reading your credit reports and disputing errors
- Rebuilding credit with tools like secured credit cards
- Preparing your credit for a mortgage, auto loan, or business loan
How to prepare for your session
Gather recent pay stubs, expense records, bank statements, every bill, and your credit reports (free at AnnualCreditReport.com). Then write down what you want: a home, a car at a fair rate, no more collection calls, or simply less stress at the end of the month. Your goals shape the advice you get.
Choosing a credit counseling agency
Look for certification, a state license, a track record, and clear answers about costs before you share personal details. Credit Services of America counselors are certified through the National Association of Certified Credit Counselors, and the company is licensed and bonded in Texas as a Credit Services Organization and a Debt Management Service Provider.
Cost
Your first session is free, no strings attached. If you enroll in a debt management plan, setup and monthly maintenance fees apply and are capped to stay affordable. You will see every fee in writing before you decide.
Does credit counseling affect your credit score?
Not directly. Counseling never touches your report. If you enroll in a debt management plan, closing enrolled accounts can cause a temporary dip; consistent payments reverse it. Keeping balances low and avoiding new credit while you work the plan protects your score along the way.
Signs it is time to call
Difficulty making minimum payments, using credit or cash advances for groceries and gas, collection calls, or a big purchase on the horizon that your credit cannot support yet. The earlier you call, the more options you have.
Credit Counseling questions
What should I bring to my first credit counseling session?
Recent pay stubs, a list of monthly expenses, your bills (paid and unpaid), bank statements, and your credit reports if you have them. If you have downloaded our Credit Repair Guide, bring your notes from it.
Is there a cost for credit counseling?
The first session is free. If you choose to enroll in a debt management plan afterward, that plan has its own fees, which are explained in writing before you sign anything.
Will credit counseling hurt my credit score?
No. Counseling itself does not touch your credit report. Enrolling in a debt management plan can cause a temporary dip, but consistent on-time payments improve your credit over time.
When is the best time to seek credit counseling?
As soon as payments feel hard to make, you are relying on credit or cash advances for daily expenses, or you have a goal like buying a home that your credit is standing in the way of. Earlier is easier.
